Allurion Balloon

The Allurion Balloon is a swallowable gastric balloon placed without surgery or endoscopy. How it works, who it may suit, what to expect, and the risks.

The Allurion Balloon is a gastric balloon designed to be swallowed rather than placed by surgery. The Allurion balloon is among the options Dr. Khanna offers.

How it works

The balloon is contained in a capsule that is swallowed with water. Once its position is confirmed, it is filled with fluid so that it occupies space in the stomach. That reduces the volume of food needed to feel full and supports a structured programme of dietary change. Placement does not require endoscopy or general anaesthesia.

The balloon is designed to remain in place for a set period — approximately four months — after which it empties on its own and passes naturally. Removal therefore does not normally require a second procedure.

Who it may be suitable for

  • People who want a non-surgical option, or who do not meet the criteria for surgery
  • People who are not ready to consider an operation
  • People who need to reduce weight before another procedure to lower surgical risk

It is not suitable for everyone. Previous stomach surgery, certain digestive conditions, some medications and pregnancy are among the factors assessed beforehand. Suitability is confirmed by clinical assessment.

What to expect

The balloon supports change; it does not act alone. Results depend on following the accompanying nutrition and activity programme, and on continuing those habits after the balloon has passed. Weight regain is possible if eating patterns return to how they were before.

Risks and considerations

  • Nausea, vomiting and cramping are common in the first days as the stomach adjusts, and are usually temporary.
  • Reflux or indigestion can occur or worsen.
  • Less commonly, the balloon can deflate early or cause obstruction, which requires prompt medical attention.
  • The balloon is a temporary treatment, not a permanent change to the anatomy.

Any symptoms that are severe or persistent should be reported to your clinician without delay.

Alternatives

Medical weight management for a non-procedural route, or bariatric surgery where a durable surgical solution is appropriate.
