Robotic bariatric surgery refers to the platform used to perform weight-loss surgery, rather than to a different operation. The procedure itself — such as a sleeve gastrectomy or a gastric bypass — is the same operation, carried out through small incisions using a robotic surgical system controlled entirely by the surgeon.

What the robotic platform actually does
The system does not operate independently. Every movement is directed by the surgeon in real time. What the platform provides is:

- Instruments with a greater range of articulation than conventional laparoscopic tools
- Filtering of natural hand tremor
- Improved ergonomics over long or technically demanding procedures
These are advantages in precision and control. They do not remove the risks of surgery, and they do not change whether surgery is appropriate for you.
Who it may be suitable for
Suitability follows the same clinical criteria as any bariatric procedure. The choice of platform — robotic or conventional laparoscopic — is a surgical judgement based on your anatomy, your medical history, prior abdominal surgery, and the specific procedure planned. In some situations a conventional laparoscopic approach remains the better choice.

Risks and considerations

Using a robotic platform does not eliminate them. Occasionally a procedure begun robotically is completed by another approach if that is safer.
